Despite being outnumbered five to one, Confederate troops under Major-General Samuel Jones, which included the complete cadet corps from the South Carolina Military Academy, effectively defended a crucial stretch of the Charleston and Savannah Railway against Union attacks. This battle was notable for being one of the few instances where the United States Marine Corps engaged in combat during the war.
